What IS wrong with people when they go on holiday? Do they leave their brains, common sense and responsibility at home? Do they assume their kids will just look after themselves, however young they are? I am so fed up with irresponsible parents who let their tots run about in car parks and along pavements where traffic is whizzing past. And don't get me started on the ones who are too busy chatting and texting on mobile phones whilst their children are running riot amongst 4X4's and white vans.
Alnwick in Northumberland is a very picturesque market town, home to the beautiful Alnwick Castle. Every year visitors flock here to see the sights and enjoy the coast, and so many of these visitors are more than welcome to our corner of the United Kingdom, the most northern county in England. But every year it's the same old, same old. Visitors come to the countryside, rent a cottage or a static caravan, pitch a tent or check into a B&B, and assume their money buys them sprawling landscape and the rights to roam through farmers' fields willy-nilly, dogs off leads, kids running amok, leaving gates open and having no respect for the fact they are actually traipsing through someones livelihood. Let me put it this way; would you be happy if someone walked their family, plus dogs, through your back garden and office, or your place of work should you be self-employed? I suspect I know the answer.
But this was visitors to the town of Alnwick, people who allow their children to run up and down pavements, chasing through car parks whilst parents chat, text and catch up online using their mobile phone. And there I was, standing with Amy on the curb waiting to cross the road in one of the car parks, when a very young boy, probably aged around 3 to 4, stepped into the road just as a large DHL van was coming along, thankfully not at speed. There was another child a few meters away just about ready to run into the road also whilst the parents were fiddling about in a handbag and taking absolutely no notice of their children whatsoever.
DHL man shook his fist AT ME, mouthing "fucking idiot" and all I could do was shout after him that the kids weren't mine! But you're reading the words of the new CJ now, the one who doesn't appreciate being called a "fucking idiot" and the one who is starting to realise that taking shit from people gets you nowhere. So I shouted particularly loudly (and maybe stupidly), causing many heads to turn, towards the distant parents pointing out that they should hold their kids' hands and take some responsibility for the fact their two sons were almost squashed by a large van. And do you know what they did? Nothing.
I suspect these parents will be the first to complain should their little angels be upset about something at school, or be picked on by the bigger boys. And I suspect they will be the type who go marching into school claiming their kids are perfect. Well let me tell you something, you irresponsible tossers, your kids will be far from perfect having you two as role models.
